On Hwy 2, traveling north from Whitefield, you will cross the Canadian River and go about 3 more miles. On the right-hand side, you will come across a dirt road. Turning right on the dirt road, you will go another 1/2 mile to 3/4 mile to an old railroad hill, railroad rails and ties have been removed. Just after going over this "hill", you will see a large gate on your left. This is a cattle field, so make sure you close the gate again after you've gone through. Follow this dirt path over an old concrete "bridge" (looks like it'll collapse, but it won't!) crossing the old stream. Briartown Cemetery is on your right. Some of the people buried there are: Spring Frog Richard West - b. 7-27-1879 d. 4-2-1977 Mattie Vandalee Jones West (1st wife of Richard) - b. 1883 d. 5-18-1912 Sarah Arvella Love West (2nd wife of Richard) - b. 1892d. 10-21-1918 Frank West (son of Richard West) - b. 9-19-1913 d. 9-5-1994 Lucy Willowby Jones (mother of Mattie) - b. 1844 d. 1-13-1896 Starr Family Cemetery: This cemetery is across Hwy 2 entrance from Briartown Cemetery (on the left coming from Whitefield). This is a difficult cemetery to get to as you must drive down a dirt road that twists and turns. I've only been to this cemetery once and don't recall if there are any turns you have to make off the main road. I'll get better directions after my Nov. trip. Some of the people buried here are: Thomas Starr Catherine Starr (Tom's wife) Cherokee Starr (Tom and Catherine's daughter) Sam Starr (Tom and Catherine's son - husband of Belle Starr) Whitefield Cemetery: This cemetery is located near the intersection of Hwy 9 and Hwy 2 in Whitefield. Go north on Hwy 2 and you will see Whitefield cemetery on the left-hand side, across from the Whitefield Post Office. Some of the people buried here are: Jack West (son of Richard West) b.7-11-1906 d. 12-11-1982 Gladys Opal Norman West (wife of Jack) b. 5-1915 d. 4-20-1990 James Rufus "Babe" Norman (father of Gladys) b.8-30-1895 d. 12-10-1977 Rufus Norman (father of James) Elizabeth Norman (wife of Rufus) b. 2-15- d. 7-27 West Family cemetery: This cemetery only contains the four graves of the John Calhoun West family members. It is located on the property of the John Calhoun West home. This is privately owned property, just outside of Porum, OK off Hwy 2.
