(Stephens) Haworth (Cherokee) born in Tahlequah Mrs. Bannon’s story: My mother is the daughter to Sarah (Hicks) and S. S. Stephens, whose ancestors are from Georgia. They were teachers and educators in Oklahoma. My father came from Indiana and is the son of Rev. W. P. Haworth, missionary among the Indians. S. S. Stephens started the Female Seminary at Tahlequah, now the Northeastern State Teachers College, and his daughter, Ida L. Stephens (now Mrs. Owen Haworth) started or opened the Mission School in the fall of 1884 in Tulsa, Oklahoma Rev. W. P. Haworth started the first Presbyterian Church in Vinita, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
