CAPTAIN, former Chief of the Shawnee Nation from the mid 1940s through the late 1950s, died Feb. 11, 1980 in Miami, OK. He was 95. Services were held in the East Side Christian Church. Burial was at the Wyandotte Indian Cemetery. Captain was born on the Shawnee Reservation near Miami before statehood. He is survived by his wife, Florence of the home, two sisters and seven children: George CAPTAIN, Leo CAPTAIN, Charlie CAPTAIN and Sandy CAPTAIN, all of Miami, Thelma SULLIVAN of Peoria, Virginia HART of Cochronton, PA, and Sue CROPP of Quapaw; 23 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and seven great-great- granchildren.
