He died March 12, 1984, in Tulsa. He had lived at 1314 North Oklahoma, Okmulgee. Wake services were held March 15 at the Cantrell Ivory Chapel in Okmulgee officiated by Rev. Bridge CHUCKLUCK. Funeral services were conducted March 16 at the Chapel in Okmulgee with Rev. Frank BEVENUE and Rev. John RILEY officiating. Pallbearers were Barney HARJO, Herman HARJO, Joe HARJO, Jr., John PHILLIPS, Gary JACKSON, Wally NEWPORT, and Scott ADAMS. Interment was in the Okmulgee Indian Baptist Cemetery. Survivors include his father and mother, James PHILLIPS and Jorene WALKER both of Okmulgee; brothers James B. PHILLIPS, Jr. of Okmulgee, and Steven Wayne PHILLIPS of Tulsa; his grandparents, Joe HARJO of Henryetta, and Elizabeth HARJO of Okmulgee.
