He died October 26, 1992, in Okmulgee. A prayer service was held October 27 in the Cantrell Ivory Chapel of the Kelley Funeral Home, Okmulgee. Funeral services were held October 29 at Newtown Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas LONG and Alex LOWE officiating. Pallbearers were Norman DANIEL, Johnny WILSON, Russell JOHNSON, Billy McLEMORE, Tommy Joe GRAYSON, and Tuffy ROBERTS. Honorary pallbearers were Lax JOHNSON, Ernie TITSWORTH, Robert FREEMAN, Aaron BERRYHILL, Solomon KELLY, Phillip COON, and Tom WASHINGTON. No information was given on the place of interment. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired in July 1982 from a heavy equipment operator with the street department of the City of Okmulgee. He was the son of Topley and Sarah POWELL, both deceased. He was survived by his four sons, Rick POWELL of Okmulgee, Freeland POWELL of Tulsa, David POWELL, Jr., of Pawnee, and Rusty POWELL of Preston; his four daughters, Sharon WHITECLOUD and Peggy POWELL, both of Okmulgee, Anita Sue POWELL of Glenpool, and Pam PALMER of Colorado Springs, CO; two brothers, Curtis SIMMERS and Abraham SIMMERS, both of Okmulgee; five sisters, Esther VAN WOUNDENBERG of Glenpool, Rebecca AUTAUBO, Priscilla KAHBEAH, and Betsy FACTOR, all of Okmulgee, and Sarah JOSHUA of Holdenville; 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
