He died August 5, 1993, in Muskogee. Funeral services were held in August, 1993. No day of services was given. No information was given on the place of interment. He was a Chinese history professor at Northern Illinois University for 31 years, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was the son of Houston and Gracie Berryhill SHIRLEY, both deceased. Also preceding him in death were a sister, Margaret STAPLETON, and a son, Lawrence James SHIRLEY. He married Helen WENDEROTH in 1972. She survives. His other survivors include daughters, Laura Kay SHIRLEY of Minneapolis, MN, Linda Marie SHIRLEY of Queens, NY, and Lisa Elaine SHIRLEY of Quebec, Canada; a son, Louis SHIRLEY of DeKalk, IL; stepdaughters, Susan Leigh RYDER of Minneapolis, and Julie Ann RYDER of DeKalb, IL; a sister, Nellie Sue EDMISTEN; two brothers, Houston SHIRLEY of Sapulpa, and Thomas SHIRLEY of Austin, TX; three grandchildren, and one stepgrandson.
