J.C. (as he was known to family and friends) was born April 14, 1925, to Grace and Jordan Cleveland Evans Senior, in Three Sands, Oklahoma. He met his future wife, Dorothy Johnson, in the small café where she worked as a teenager. He caught her eye because he was the only person in the cfe who was not drinking coffee. They were married on July 20, 1943. After the birth of their first daughter, Sherry, in 1944, J.C. joined the armed forces and served honorably until discharged. He and Dorothy moved to California in the late 1940s to seek work. In the next 13 years he worked at a variety of jobs; from picking fruit and crops to working in the sawmills of Sutherland, Oregon. In 1958 J.C.s natural mechanical ability landed him a job with the Roads and Bridges Dept. for the County of Kern. He was eventually made foreman for the Wasco division and maintained that position until his retirement. Upon retirement he and Dorothy moved to the mountain community of California Hot Springs where they avidly participated in local clubs and organizations. J.C. also served as a member on the California Hot Springs School Board for 7-1/2 years. They lived for many happy years in the mountain home that J.C. helped build until ill health forced them to relocate back to town. During their 59-1/2 years of marriage, J.C. and Dorothy raised a family of two daughters and three sons. J.C. was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Sherry Self by 1 day. Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy; daughter, Audrey Baker and her husband, Doug; son, Steve Evans and his wife, Karen; son, Jim Evans; son, Brett Evans and his wife Tammy, son-in-law, Buddy Self and sister, Geraldine Wilson and Nadine Bibles of Blackwell, Oklahoma. Survivors also include his grandchildren, Susie Lockary, Jennifer Lehman, Carrie Crow, Terry Hammond, Bradley Self, Catherine Baker, Lilly Evans, Rose Baker and Joe Evans. J.C. was a mechanical wizard and that combined with his amazing strength and profound common sense made him a natural leader. He was the first man on the worksite and the last man to leave. His strength and wry wit will be sorely missed by his family. Services will be held at the Church of the Nazarene in Terra Bella on Wednesday, at 1 p.m. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Noble County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/noble/noble.html
