All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== :: Durant Daily Democrat 26 Feb 2005 Alma Laverne James Phillips, 71 Alma Laverne James Phillips, 71, Sherman, Texas, went home to be with our Lord Wednesday, February 23, 2005, after an unexpected illness. She died at Wilson N. Jones Hospital. LaVerne was born to John Harvey James and Margaret Inez Gass James on November 6, 1933, in Perry. She gave birth to a daughter, Renita Denee. She was a member of the Baptist faith. LaVerne married Billy Donald Phillips on September 4, 1970, (Labor Day) in Durant. He preceded her in death in 1993. LaVerne retired from State Farm Insurance after a lifelong career working at the Regional Office in Dallas. She moved to Sherman her last 5 years to be close to her grandchildren, Angelica Rose and Autumn Jade Frazer. She cherished her girls and spent many hours playing games and cards or just driving around with them looking at nature; she also enjoyed just hugging them. She loved fishing, bingo, birdwatching and going out to eat. LaVerne is preceded in death by her parents and brothers Leon, Paschall and Kenneth James. She is survived by her daughter, Denee, and her husband Mark Frazer of Sherman, Texas, stepson, Donald Brance Phillips and his wife Debbie of Bozeman, Mont.; grandchildren Kelsey Phillips of Bozeman, Troy Frazer and wife Chelsea of Durant, Crystina Pyle of Hesperia, Calif., and Angelica Rose and Autumn Jade Frazer of Sherman. LaVerne is also survived by her sisters, Norene Byers of Durant, and Dorothy Davis and husband Paul of Little Elm, Texas; brothers, C.E. James and wife Marcia of Bokchito, and Don James of Denison, Texas; and numerous special nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed and we will forever treasure the years she was in our lives. Family night will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. today at Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday at Fairview Baptist Church in Sherman. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Altrusa to help children in Chinese orphanages receive needed surgeries and healthcare or be visited by a Hugging Granny as was LaVerne. http://www.altrusa.ws.
