Nelson was born February 5, 1923 in Minneapolis, MN and died August 16, 2005 in Oklahoma City, OK. He is a graduate of Louisiana State University where he received a B.S. in Chemistry. He retired from Kerr- McGee Corporation in 1986. John served in the U.S. Army in the Infantry during WWII. He participated in the invasions in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy and fought during the Battle of the Bulge. He received many medals and decorations including the Silver Star, Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. He was recalled for duty in 1950, saw one and a half years of service in Korea, serving in the Infantry and received a Bronze Star and two more Purple Hearts. He was preceded in death by his older son George, daughter-in-law Suzanne and two grandchildren David and Mary Kate all who died in an airplane crash on July 28, 2001, granddaughters Carrie Marie Schwarz who died October 18, 1982 and Ashley Kay Jones who died July 13, 1987, and a brother Donald Nelson. Survivors include his wife of 58 years Lucille; daughter Virginia and husband Philip Schwarz, grandchildren John, Keith and wife Jennifer, and Doug Schwarz. Son Joseph and wife Cara, grandchildren David Pitt and son Sydney, Adam Lagaly and wife Tarah and their children Raven and Carmen. Daughter Michelle and husband Andrew Gaddy. Daughter Mary and husband Jerry Jones, and grandchildren Jeremy Jones, and Christy and husband Eric Squire; a sister Helen Poleski, Berkley, MI. Our prayers of thanksgiving go out to his caring compassionate doctors, M.F. Kanaa M.D., Internal Medicine, Oncology and Homology, H.T. Kurkjian M.D., Urologist, and Kent H. Potts M.D., Cardiologist. Anyone who believes in angels on earth will find those angels in each of the nurses and techs that work on floor 4B at Mercy Health Center. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society in care of Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church or the donor's choice. Evening Prayer Service will be at 7:00 P.M., Friday, August 19, 2005 at Smith & Kernke Chapel, 14624 N. May Avenue.
