Bray was born July 22, 1925, in Leedey, OK, to Clifford and Lula Bray. Mel graduated from Leedey High School. He then served in the United States Army from 1944-46 in Company I, 169th Infantry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division on Leyte and Luzon in the Philippine Islands and in Japan. He attended Southwestern State College in Weatherford, OK, where he met Jacqueline Beckham. They married on Dec 27, 1949. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, and later attained a Masters Degree in Education from West Texas State College in Canyon, TX. He taught school in Hammon, OK, for two years and served as a grade school principal. Mel and Jackie moved to Amarillo, TX, in 1952. where Mel worked for the Civil Service at Amarillo Air Base. He was a technical writer and educator. He took these skills to FAA when he moved to Oklahoma City in 1964. He retired in 1981. He then continued his career as Project Director with the Int'l Civil Aviation Organization in Manila, Philippines, from 1981 to 1984. Mel was baptized into Christ in the 1950's. He taught adult Bible classes for 45 years. He loved teaching, and in his senior years, his class was very important to him. He continued to teach until his last few months when limited by ill health. He passed away early Saturday, August 24, 2002, at Spanish Cove Health Center in Yukon, OK. He is survived by, Jackie, his wife of 52 years, of Edmond, OK. Other family members include his brother Doyle Bray and wife, Oleta, of Leedey, OK and sister Jeanne Craig and husband, Joe, also of Leedey. He is also survived by his children, Max Bray and wife, Patty, of Edmond, Celeste Matthews and her husband, Dennis, currently living in Belgium, and his grandchildren, Stephanie Bray, Zac Bray, Lee Matthews and Kate Matthews. Mel was highly respected and loved by those who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Service is scheduled for 10AM Wednesday, August 28, at Northwest Church of Christ, 4301 NW 23rd, Oklahoma City, OK, 73107.
