The Lord looked down from Heaven and saw it was time to call Dorothy to join Him in Eternal Rest. She was born December 8, 1910 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Leo and Mary (Clow) Packard. She attended Marquette University, majoring in journalism, where she met and married fellow journalism student, Emmett Francis Brachmann. She worked for the Milwaukee Sentinel/Wisconsin News and was well known for writing a shopping column, "Gossip From the Shops with Sally Smart." As a wife and mother of two daughters she was active in Girl Scouts, PTA events, and community fundraisers and yet found time to create unique and memorable birthday parties. She participated in high school and city plays culminating with "Vod-Vil" shows she produced and directed for five years in her Florida retirement community. She was also an avid bridge player. Dorothy and Emmett owned and operated an orthopedic shoe store in Wausau, WI for many years. They then retired to Leesburg, Florida. Years after Emmett's death, she moved to Bethany, Oklahoma to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
