(Elfert) Virginia E. (Elfert), 87, was born November 5, 1915, in Lake Charles, LA, and lived in Oklahoma City since 1961. She passed away peacefully on February 25 after a period of declining health. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Fred J. Bird of Oklahoma City; son, Rev. Stephen Bird, pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Okarche; daughter, Elaine Stebler and grandson, Sean Stebler, of Perkins; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents Thomas and Adeline Elfert; brothers T.C., Adam, and Merna Elfert; sisters Rosalie Lee, Vivian Yakus, and May Abrahams. Before marriage, she worked as accounting clerk for S.H. Kress and Co. and as collection clerk for Gulf States Utilities, both of Lake Charles. She was an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, participating in the Altar Society, Club 55, Sewing Group, and other organizations. In 1977, she was honored by being selected as "Woman of Achievement" for service to her church and community. Virginia was a loving wife and mother, and was devoted to her faith. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Catholic Charities, 1501 N. Classen, Oklahoma City, 73106, or to another charity. A Vigil for the deceased will be held on Thursday, Feb. 27, 7:00 pm, and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 28, 2:00 pm. Both services will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, NW 50th and Grove, Oklahoma City.
