Barber Age 74, Lawton - Services will be at 9:30 AM Monday, June 6, 2005 at the Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Gene Jorgenson, interim pastor at Central Baptist Church officiating. Sergeant Major Barber died Tuesday. Burial with full military honors will be in Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin. He was born August 9, 1930 in Oklahoma City to Bill and Bertha Neal Barber. He married Mareno F. Taylor on October 10, 1954 in Gainesville, Texas. Sergeant Major Barber entered the Army in September 1950 and completed Infantry Basic Training at Fort Riley, Kansas. He served with the 2nd Infantry Division Artillery in Korea, where he served two tours. He completed two tours in Vietnam, the latest in 1970 as Command Sergeant Major of the 3rd Battalion, 18th Artillery. He also served three tours in Germany. He served as Command Sergeant Major of the 7th Training Battalion, US Army Training Center at Fort Sill. He retired on August 31, 1976 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana as the Post Command Sergeant Major. He had been awarded the Bronze Star three times, the Air Medal three times, the Army Commendation Medal twice, the good conduct medal with 6 loops, the Legion of Merit award, and numerous service medals and campaign ribbons. Following his retirement, he was a carpenter up until his illness. He was very well known for exhibiting at car shows and was a member of the VFW and NCOA. Survivors include his wife, of the home, two children; Randy Taylor and his wife Linda Kay, Yukon, and D'Etta Humphrey, Lawton, a granddaughter; Heather Humphrey, Mustang, a sister-in-law; Norma Barber, Oklahoma City, and three nephews and two nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother; Bill Barber, and a sister; Betty Reeves.
