All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::Resthaven Memoril Gardens--OKC OK Custer, Steve Steve Custer, age 44, died unexpectedly on Sunday January 5, 2003. Steve was born and grew up in Oklahoma City. He moved to California in 1979 and to Santa Cruz in 1981. Steve graduated from Cabrillo College in 1985 with an associate degree in Fire Science Technology, and graduated from UCSC in 1987 with a BA degree in economics. He was a firefighter at UCSC for 15 years. Steve was passionate about the mountains and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed swimming, hiking, climbing, cycling, sailing, scuba diving, cross country skiing, river rafting, reading, building and fixing things, listening to eclectic music and taking afternoon naps. Steve learned to read before kindergarten and continued this accelerated aptitude for learning throughout his life, mastering many fields of thought. He will be remembered for his intellect, adventurous spirit and big warm heart. Steve was a man of free will, always ready for his next adventure. Steve met his wife, Ruth in 1983 while studying first aid and training for triathlons. Numerous adventures they shared include 3 river trips through the Grand Canyon and many years of backpacking throughout the Sierras accompanied by their dog, Giza, with whom he felt a very special bond. He was a poet, handyman, baseball fan, BBQ king, and a loving son, brother, husband, friend, nephew, cousin and uncle. Steve is survived by his wife and partner of 19 years, Ruth "Sahar" Segal. He also leaves his brother, Todd Custer, mother, Lera Custer, and father, Ron Custer of Oklahoma City, and numerous other close relatives. Memorial services will be held Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel of the Roses, Resthaven Memorial Garden, SW 104th & Western. Donations may be made in Steve's honor to: Friends of Santa Cruz County Animals, 27 Janis Way, Scotts Valley, CA 95066; Native Animal Rescue, 2200 7th Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95062; or any local animal shelter or SPCA of your choice.
