Caldwell, 90, passed from this life to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005. Carl was born November 19, 1914 in Natchez, Mississippi. He grew up in Dallas, Texas graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School at the age of 16 in 1931. He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1934 earning double degrees in Accounting and Statistics at the age of 19. Graduating in the middle of the depression shaped his character; he began a long career with Southwestern Bell in 1935. His first job was loading trays of lead plates into Addressograph machines to print the telephone bills. He held various positions in Southwestern Bell's accounting departments in Dallas and St Louis, where he met his wife Colleen, before being named as Comptroller for Southwestern Bell's Oklahoma's operations in 1964. In 1979, he reluctantly retired after 44 years of service. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and completed officers' candidate school at Miami Beach, Florida. He recalled studying many nights in the closet because black out regulations as well as the weekly multi- hour inspection fallout on a golf course in Miami Beach in the summer heat. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on August 5, 1942 and stationed at Patterson Field. During the course of the war, he was promoted several times and finally commissioned to the rank of Major as chief of operations of the fifteenth statistical control unit. He returned to service during the Korean War reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel serving at the Pentagon. Carl loved the new technology of the day, whether that was IBM punch cards & sorters in 1942, VCRs & calculators in 1972, and satellite dishes & personal computers in the 1980's. He was also one of pioneers of do-it-yourself home improvement; his many projects around the house kept him and his three sons busy. In addition to his wife, Colleen, Mr. Caldwell is survived by three sons, Carl, William, John and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, William David. A private memorial service will be held at the Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas.
