We lost our dear father, brother, grandfather, and friend on the evening of January 4, 2003. We are very thankful for the many years we had with him and also for the peacefulness of his passing. Don was born on August 28, 1925 to Herbert and Gertrude Calvert (Cano) Canfield, in Oklahoma City. An All-State tackle for OKCs Central High School Class of 1943, he attended OU, Colorado and Purdue, earning degrees from Oklahoma in Civil Engineering "47 and Geology "48. He first worked for Carter Oil as a land man before earning his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1956. He served two stints in the Marines, WWII and Korea, acting as a cold-weather drill instructor and rising to the rank of Captain. While at Harvard, Don met Walt Helmrich who sent him to Midland where he worked as a land man before returning to Tulsa continuing to work for Helmrich & Payne. He later served as executive vice president at both Unit Drilling & Exploration and Toklan Oil until his retirement, keeping his hand in the oil and gas business with various deals thereafter. Truly one to give the shirt off his back to make a deal, he once traded the suit he was wearing to secure an oil & gas lease. Don loved Sooner football (fortunately sleeping thru this years OSU game), tennis, snow skiing, hunting, fishing and traveling the Rocky Mountains, taking his children with him on many trips. He will be sorely missed. He is survived by his twin sister, Dorothy Story of OKC, his brother William of NYC, his son William Calvert of Fayetteville, AR, his daughter Caren Leigh Floyd of Austin, TX, his grandchildren Benjamin Calvert and Alexandra Estha Leigh Canfield and his nephews Richard Story, Craig Story, and Billy Bullis. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Betty Bullis, and his nephew Herb Bullis. As per his wishes, his body will be cremated with a portion of his ashes scattered in his beloved Yellowstone country. A memorial service and wake will be held to honor and celebrate his life at the Celebrity Club of Tulsa on Thursday, January 9, from 4-7pm. All his friends are invited to share memories and raise a glass to this dear man. Donations in lieu of flowers should be made to the John 3:16 Mission or the Salvation Army.
