Joe Rhea Cannon was born on January 2, 1925 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Nena Mae Willis and Arthur Rhea Cannon. He had an older brother, Bill, an Air Force Pilot killed in World War II. Joe Cannon was a combat veteran of the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He received his B.A. from the University of Oklahoma and his L.L.B. from the University of Oklahoma Law School. Joe was a long time defense lawyer who practiced throughout the state. He served in the state legislature and was elected and served as Muskogee County Attorney. Joe was also Commissioner of Public Safety, Chief Legal Counsel to Governor J. Howard Edmondson, and an Oklahoma County District Judge. His career in the practice of law was rewarding to him, but his greatest pride was in his family. Joe is survived by his wife, Caroline. Joe and Caroline recently celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on February 19, 2003. He is also survived by his daughter, Dana Brinson and her husband, Mike, a son, Scott Cannon and his wife Dana, and daughter, Toni Hoffman. Joe and Caroline have six grandchildren: Blair Holmboe, Avery and Maggie Cannon, Scott and Sara Brinson and Keihl Hoffman. Joe led a vibrant and active life. He often said, "You only come this way once, put a little color in the game!" He did! Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, February 28, at Crossings Community Church, 14600 N. Portland, Oklahoma City.
