All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Carter, Margaret M. "Meg" Margaret M. "Meg" Carter, died peacefully at home, on December 7, 2002. She never lost her sense of humor or her enjoyment of friends and family even in the most difficult of her last days. Meg was born January 17, 1915, in Conway Springs, Kansas, as the eldest of four children to Lloyd and Venetta Martin. Meg moved to Kansas City, and attended Westport High School, where she was active in Drama and elected Homecoming Queen. After graduation, she worked as a model and a saleswoman for a Kansas City department store. It was in Kansas City that she met her first husband and father of her children, Alan D. Hill. American Optical transferred Meg and Alan to Oklahoma City in the early forties. Together they founded Hill's Opticians and worked until Alan's death in 1956. Meg continued to operate Hill's Opticians and expanded the business by opening the first optical store in suburban Oklahoma City as one of the original tenants of Penn Square Mall. It was her sense of style and ability to market her products as a fashion accessory that led to her success in the optical business. As a single mother, she taught her sons by example that people can enjoy life if one will have a curious mind and develop a sense of humor not being afraid to laugh at ones" mistakes. In 1963, Meg married Raymond R. Carter, and enjoyed twenty-nine years of marriage until Raymond's death in 1992. Meg often said that she had been blessed with the two men that had been her husbands. A longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Meg fondly remembered her years as a fifth-grade Sunday School teacher and the relationships she developed with the young people of the church. She remained active in Westminster until her health would not allow her to attend. Meg cherished her friendships with the women of the Wednesday Sewing Club and Thursday Book Club. She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Mundell, and her brother, Lloyd Martin. She is survived by her youngest brother, Bob Martin of Coos Bay, Oregon, and her two sons, Stephen Hill of Angleton, Texas, and Michael Hill and his wife, Jan of Oklahoma City. Her grandchildren, Alan Hill of Oklahoma City, Graham Hill of Edmond and Jessica Hill of Angleton, Texas, also survive her. The family wishes to express their gratitude to her gentle caregivers, Jessie Crowson, Geneva Milton, Betty Blaylock, Jimmie McEwen, Jackie Perry, LuDean Hetch and Kathryn Rhodes, all of whom showed great compassion while caring for Meg. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a charity of choice. Services will be held Tues., at 2:00 PM, in the Chapel at Hahn- Cook/Street & Draper.
