Sarah, the 6th of 11 children, was born May 12, 1908 in a dugout in Oklahoma Territory where her parents had settled near Ft. Cobb during an Oklahoma Land Run. The family moved to Bliss (later called Marland) while she was still a baby, where she grew up enjoying the world famous 101 Ranch activities and became personally acquainted with many of the ranch hands and performers. She married O.L. Crain on Halloween, 1925. O. L., a Lone Scouts of America alumni and lifetime newspaperman, started the 101 Ranch Magazine in 1925 and served as its editor. After many employment moves, Mr. Crain was hired by then Commissioner of Labor, W. A. Pat Murphy, and the Crains relocated to Oklahoma City. There, in 1939, they purchased their first house, while O. L. was Chief of Personnel, Training and Information for the Dept. of Labor. In 1941, Sarah was baptized into Christ and became a member of the Capitol Hill Church of Christ on S. Harvey. She began teaching Bible classes in 1946 and continued to do so for nearly 35 years. She constantly wrote encouragement to her students, to new members, and to those missing from services. Many today may remember receiving such a postcard or letter from "Sister Crain." Before ailments confined her to her home, she was also a member of the Grand Boulevard and the South Walker congregations. She was a kind and generous woman who always saw the good in others. In addition to being a devoted Christian, she enjoyed history, reading and gardening. She had a good sense of humor and greatly enjoyed a good practical joke. She continued to live in her home of 63 years until her health required her to move to a skilled care facility, in May 2002. She spent her last months, well cared for, in Bellevue Nursing Center. The family wishes to thank the Bellevue staff for their care and compassion. She was preceded in death by 7 sisters, 3 brothers, her husband "Red," her daughter Alice, her son Jesse, and 2 grandchildren. She is survived by May & O. L. Crain, Jr. (son), Shirley & Howard Crain (son), Sherilyn & Pat Crain (son), 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Services: South Colonial Chapel at Vondel Smith & Son South, 11 a.m., Mon. Feb. 10. Donations may be made to the Tipton Home for Children, PO Box 370, Tipton, OK 73570. VONDEL L. SMITH & SON MORTUARY 6934 S.
