He and Birdie Irene Hocker were married June 4, 1924 in Barnsdall, OK. He began working in the oilfields of Osage County around 1924 to 1925 for Lewis Oil Co. and later Texaco Oil Co. until he retired in 1964. He then moved to a farm near Sedan, Kansas, and then to Peru, KS. He lived in Peru until 1998 when he lost his wife of more than 73 years. Mr. Carter was moved to Okla. City to live with his daughter Naomi and husband Harvey. His observation when in OKC was 'the traffic is just like a bunch of ants.' But he adjusted to life in the city, even took up 'mall walking.' His love of God and the Bible were an important part of his life, as was his church. His life was one patterned after the example of Jesus Christ and His teachings. As Jesus stated once, 'In whom there is no guile.' Virgil truly was a blessed man, and was a blessing to many, especially his family.
