Davis died Feb. 6, 2003, at his home in Oklahoma City after an extended illness. He was 65. Born March 24, 1937, in Ludlow, Miss., he was a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, with degrees in church music. He served as a minister of music for 25 years in Southern Baptist churches in Kentucky, Georgia, Maryland, Indiana and Oklahoma, including First Baptist Church of Midwest City. He worked for 10 years for the Mission Plan, a pre-need company based in Houston, Texas, and retired from that company in December, 2000, as state director. W.J. was preceded in death by his mother and father, Joe and Willie Davis; a son, Lee; brother, John Davis and sister, Myrtis Lehner, both at Mississippi. He is survived by his wife, Marie, of the home; son, Lane, and daughter-in-law, Sabrina Davis, and grandson, Austin, of Burkburnett, Texas; siblings Joe, Curtis, Cliff, and Clara Davis and Dorothy Dickerson, all of Jackson, Miss. W.J. will be remembered for his commitment to Christ, his love and loyalty to his family, his devotion to human rights and his enduring enjoyment of people. Funeral services will be at 11 am. Monday in the First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City. Friends are making donations to the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City, of which he was a member.
