Frey was born in Chicago, Illinois July 17, 1898, one of 12 children. She died on February 27, 2003 in OKC. She came to Oklahoma in 1908, as a child, returning to Chicago where she later worked at the telephone Company. In 1918, she returned to Oklahoma and took a job with Pioneer Telephone as a telephone operator. She was married to Harry Frey and they never had any children. He preceded her in death. She has 3 nieces, Hazel Vaught of OR, Bernaden Porter of CA and Mabel Armstrong of CA and 1 nephew, James Albert Fields of OKC; 3 great nieces, Lavonna Mehard of Enid, OK, Ladonna Lass of Enid, OK and Echo Ellen Fields of OR; 6 great nephews, Gene Raymond Page of CA, James Hugh Fields of OKC, Philip Lamar Vaught of OR, Thomas Lionel Vaught of CA, Jay O'Halleran of MO and William O'Halleran also of MO. Margaret lived at the same residence for over 84 years. She drove to the VA Hospital from around wartime until she was 98 years old, volunteering as a Nurse for over 50,000 hours. During that time, she established a very close relationship with Dick Lutz the VA Chaplain and scores of patients. She didn't stop driving until she was 98 years old. Chaplain Lutz was with her for numerous awards, which includes the following, 'Just to mention a few': -More volunteer hours than anyone with the VA Hospital (Nationally), also Awards for over 50,000 hours given, she received the Highest awards given by the VA Hospital (Nationally). Margaret was recognized by Presidents Nixon, Carter and Clinton, State Congressman Bruster and State Senator Robert Cullison. Some of her most prestigious awards were: Veteran's Highest Services Award, recognized by President Nixon in 1970, Distinguished American Citizen Award from Oklahoma City University, American Legion National Award, J. C. Penny 'Golden Rule' Award in 1988, State of Oklahoma Award, presented by Robert Cullison in July 1988, Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Service in June 1991, Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge in 1997 (this was also awarded to Cathy Keating and Linda Cavanau) and the 5 Alive Award which nominated her for the Thomas Jefferson Award, which she won. Her hobbies where her yard and her flowers. She wanted to have people remember her as a person who loved people and wanted, and did, give of herself to others. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, March 03, 2003 in the Hunter Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Interment at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
