Hugh was born on May 23, 1920 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. When he was two years old his family moved to California and settled in the San Fernando Valley. He taught history and served in various administrative positions with the Alhambra City School District until he retired in 1981. During retirement he enjoyed painting, stamp collecting and discovered a passion for lawn bowling. For several years he published the bowling club newsletter and enjoyed the many friendships he made while he was involved. At UCLA he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He was a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church. He and Sylvia belonged to the Side by Side Couples Club where they made many lifelong friends. At church he served as an usher for many years and served on several boards.
