In his last days, he benefited from hospice care and in his final hours, a vigil was kept by his children and grandchildren. Born in Rochester, Indiana on December 13, 1904, Walter grew up in Joliet, Illinois, where he got his start in the milk and ice cream business by driving a horse-drawn milk wagon. Enterprising from the first, he expanded his route by calling on potential customers. This was the leading edge of an 80 year sales career. He retired from the real estate business in OKC at age 91. He married the late Elizabeth McCambridge in Joliet in 1942 and they raised their family primarily in OKC and Muskogee, OK, where he was a leader in civic affairs, including serving as president of the Lion's Club and on the boards of the Salvation Army and Boy Scouts. He was an executive with Carnation Milk Company and later owned and operated Carnation Ice Cream Land on North May. He repeatedly told his children: if you can't say something nice about people don't say anything, and he practiced that admonition himself. At age 65, Walter obtained a real estate broker's license and spent the next 26 years selling houses in the OKC metro area. He was a member of the million dollar club (denoting annual sales of at least $1 million) for some of those years. In 1995, the Oklahoma City metropolitan board of realtors presented Walter with a special award in honor of his active participation in the real estate industry. Walter and Elizabeth were members of Oklahoma City's Christ the King Catholic Church, where they both were active in the Share and Care Club and Daybreak. He is survived by three children, Cathe Schmitt and Jim Green, both of Dallas, TX, and Richard Green of OKC, eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth "Babe" Green, his parents, Walter and Ida Green, a brother, Robert and sister, Edith, all of whom lived their formative years in Joliet. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association or the March of Dimes. A Memorial Mass will be held at Christ the King Church on November 30 at 10 a.m. Published in the Oklahoman on 11/27/2002. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Oklahoma County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/oklahoma/oklahoma.html
