She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-four years, Elwood. She also leaves behind three children: Richard of Atlanta, GA, Pamela of Lake James, NC, and Dana of Choctaw, OK. She is survived by seven grandchildren, twin great grandchildren & her mother, Jewel Martin of McAlester, OK, numerous nieces, nephews and many many good friends, as well as extended family at Brookwood Baptist Church. Her Sunday School classmates were a joy to her. Lavaughn's life was distinguished by a thirty year career in nursing. She began at Deaconess in 1964, working as a nurse's aide. She later became an LPN and finally went on to become an RN. During various phases of her career, she worked at Doctor's General, Mercy, Baptist, and South Community Hospitals. She bestowed the same loving care on her patients as she did on her family. Among her family and friends, she was known for her homemade cinnamon rolls. They were her way of saying 'Thank you', 'I care', or 'I love you' to the people she encountered in life. She loved to read her Bible and spent quiet time doing so every day. She was about to finish her sixth reading of the Bible, cover to cover, and always said that she learned something new every time she read it. The family would like to thank the entire 7th floor T.I.C.U. staff of Baptist/ Integris Medical Center for the kind care and support they showed to our beloved Lavaughn and to our family and friends. We could not have asked for a more caring environment in which to say 'Goodbye' to her. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Family will receive friends @ Vondel Smith South from 6:00-8:00PM Friday, September 13, 2002. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 @ Vondel Smith South. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens. VONDEL L. SMITH & SON MORTUARY 6934 S.
