Obit of Honea, Marian - Oklahoma County, Oklahoma Submitted by: Gene Phillips 19 Feb 2006 Return to Oklahoma County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/oklahoma/oklahoma.html ========================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.html ========================================================================== ::Memory Lane Cemetery--Harrah OK Honea, Marian Marian A. died on August 28, 2005, in Oklahoma City. Marian was born May 19, 1909 in Oshkosh, WI to Edgar W. and Emma Humburg Swank. Mr. Swank's teaching profession led him to Kansas, Missouri, and finally to Anadarko, OK where he was appointed to the position of Agent to the Kiowa tribe. Marian graduated from Anadarko High School and attended Oklahoma A & M College, now Oklahoma State University. She taught music at Carnegie High School where her music groups won many awards. She also taught in the Anadarko High School system. While at A & M, she met and fell in love with C. C. 'Ted' Honea of Harrah, OK. Ted, an engineering major and star baseball player for the Aggies, stole her heart with his great looks, impeccable manners and soft voice. They were married December 21, 1930 and settled in Harrah. They moved to Oklahoma City when Ted went to work for OG&E where he stayed until retirement. When they moved to Oklahoma City, Marian became a member of Trinity Baptist Church and remained a faithful member for life. She taught the two-year-olds in Sunday School for over forty years. Marian was an accomplished musician with a lilting soprano voice. She could, and would, break into song with little or no encouragement. She sang with the Shade Tree Musicians Senior Choir at Trinity for many years. Her greatest earthly achievement was her tremendous outpouring of love to her family. She built many wonderful memories for her children and grandchildren. Many of the grandchildren's fondest memories are when they got to 'spend the night at Nana's'. She made an ordinary sleep-over something very special every time. Marian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ted; brother, Robert; grandson Bryan Garlock; and granddaughter, Susan Shadid Hines. She is survived by her daughter, Gayla Honea Shadid and husband, Jim; daughter, Sharon Honea; granddaughter, Janet Shadid Davis and husband, Rob; granddaughter, Terri Garlock; and grandson, Michael Shadid. She is also survived by great- grandchildren Lindsey Jones and husband, Scott; David and John Speer; Sam Davis; Jameson and Parker Shadid; Katie and Chris Hines; and Sophie Kamhi; and great-great-grandchildren Rachel, Brandon and Alyssa Jones. Marian is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Dorothy Swank Hamilton. Though she spent her later years unable to walk and with failing memory, those of us-family and friends-knew her as a cheerful and bubbly mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always enjoyed any family gathering where there was fun and laughter and plenty of good food. Her memory books and old photo albums tell us of a beautiful, talented school girl with hopes and dreams; a college coed and member of the Chi Omega Sorority, enjoying campus life just like young people of today and of every generation; the new bride and young mother who volunteered her time for her children's school activities; the good neighbor and loyal friend. Marian would like for us all to see past the elderly faces and bent bodies of our senior citizens and see them as they all were-people just like us. A celebration of her life will be held at Smith & Kernke Funeral Chapel, 1401 NW 23, at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2005 with Pastor Jim Pittman officiating. Interment will be at Memory Lane Cemetery, Harrah, OK. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity International Baptist Church Children's Department. SMITH & KERNKE 1401 NW 23rd ST.
