Paul was born November 29, 1923 in Potomac, Illinois to Harvey John Hammons and Leota Bernice (Weller) Hammons. The family moved to the Frederick, Oklahoma area when Paul was a small child, and he grew up there graduating from Clinton High School in 1941. During WWII, Paul worked for Douglas Aircraft leaving there to work for the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission as a computer programmer after the war. He worked for the Ford Motor Company in data processing and then returned to the Employment Security Commission until his retirement in 1984. While working for the Employment Security Commission, he met and married Mary Sue Hale in 1947, and in 1957 their daughter Paula Sue was born. Paul was an avid race car fan, returning to Illinois every year to attend the Indy 500 with his Illinois cousins. During these trips, Paul and Mary Sue were able to visit their "Illinois Family", the Weller Clan. Being an only child, Paul was thought of as a brother rather than a cousin to the Wellers. After retirement, Paul, who had a beautiful speaking voice, volunteered to read for the Society for the Blind. He and Mary Sue delivered Meals on Wheels, a practice that Paul continued alone through August of 2002. Paul is preceded in death by his father, Harvey, mother, Leota "Red" and his lifetime love of 54 years, Mary Sue. He is survived by his daughter, Paula of Houston, TX; half- brother, David Hammons and his wife, Diana; step-mother, Ozell Hammons; "brothers" Jack Weller, Bill Weller, Dick Weller, Ken Weller and 'sisters" Sheila Bieritz and Karen Drennan, all of Illinois. He is also survived by a niece, Ellen Albright, and her husband Lyle, of Choctaw; nephews, Chris Albright, wife Stacey and daughter Haley, of Atlanta, GA, and Matthew Albright, of Dallas, TX; brother-in law Mel Walker of Choctaw and many, many friends. Paul never met a stranger, could converse about practically anything and had the gift of humor which kept him going during rough times. His perseverance and character were an example to all. He will be greatly missed. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2003, Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Chapel.
