All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::Bill Merritt FH--Bethany OK Mercer, Marie Rose Kochmer Marie Rose Kochmer Mercer went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 23, 2003. Born to Matthew and Mary Kochmer in Syracuse, NY, on February 19, 1925, she raised her only daughter, Susan, in Orlando, Florida after the 1967 death of her husband, Ralph Voorhees. She subsequently married Wilbur Aikens and lived in Florida, Indiana and Kentucky where she was again widowed in 1983. Marie moved to Oklahoma City in 1987 to be near her daughter, son-in-law John Gelm, and grandsons Matthew and William Gelm. She married Joe Mercer in 1999 and they were living at the Mansion at the Waterford at the time of her death. Marie was a devout member of Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church and a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great- Grandmother, and Friend. Working in Department Store sales positions, she became an excellent and avid seamstress while duplicating and adapting the clothing sold in the store for her wear and for her daughter. Among her many hours of volunteer work, she made Baptism Bibs for her church. She was an eager participant in various craft projects and in gardening and tending houseplants. Marie was also an active volunteer in The American Legion Auxiliary where she held many offices at Unit and District level of the Auxiliary and Salon 82 of the Auxiliary's Eight and Forty. She served as President of District 5 and Bethany-Warr Acres Unit 12. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Ralph Voorhees and Wilbur Aikens, brothers Matthew, Edward and Joseph Kochmer, and sisters Celia Majaika and Virginia Hendricks. She is survived by her husband Joe, daughter Susan and her husband John Gelm, all of the City, Grandson Matthew Gelm of Ponca City, Grandson William Gelm and his wife Diane, Yukon, great-grandchildren Billy, Jeffery, Alex and Emily Gelm and Joe's daughters Cynda Jo Knight and husband Albert, Alva, and Jill Matthews and husband Gene, Guthrie, five sisters Louise Dutka of Fishkill, NY, Catherine Fron of Jermyn, PA, Elizabeth Super, Factoryville, PA, Josephine Barone of W. Hempsted, NY, Anna Mae Sacco of Dunmore, PA and brother Andrew Kochmer of Factoryville, PA. Viewing of Marie will be at the Bethany Bill Merritt Funeral Home starting on Monday, February 24th with the Mass at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at 10:00 AM. The family has suggested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to programs promoting stroke prevention and rehabilitation or to the American Legion Children's Home in Ponca City.
