Ed G. Klein, Pioneer State Oil Figure, Dies Pioneer state petroleum products dealer Ed G. Klein, 83, of 1524 NW 36, died Sunday [8 May 1966] in St. Anthony Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home, with entombment in Fairlawn Cemetery mausoleum. Klein was one of the first petroleum products dealers in Oklahoma, and was an active oil jobber in Oklahoma City more than 46 years. He was born [16 Feb 1883] in Elmwood, Kan., and attended Central State College, Edmond. He was elected president of his graduating class in 1906, and was business manager of the student paper. After a year of teaching at his alma mater, Klein moved to Oklahoma City. in 1911, he acquired half-interest in Sloan-Klein Oil Co., beginning business with a few milk cans, a spring wagon, a horse and a mule. Later he opened the first service station in Oklahoma City. During World War I, he served with the state Secret Society of Defense under Gov. Bob Williams and also headed the Petroleum Conservation Commission for the state. Klein retired as an oil jobber in 1930 when Sloan-Klein Oil Co. was sold out to an Enid firm, and the name was changed to Red Rock Oil Co. He remained semi-active until 1957 when he sold out his remaining interests. He was a Mason and a Shriner, and was an honorary member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. In 1962 he was named a Distinguished Alumni Of Central State College, and in 1965 was presented a Distinguished Service Award by the school. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; a stepson, Lt. Col. J. L. Sibley, McLain, Va.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. W. F. Andrews, 4033 NW 60; his stepmother, Mrs. Mary Pybas, Bernice; two sisters and six half- sisters. (Buried in Fairlawn Mausoleum beside 1st. wife, Pearl Klein d.
