"Mac" McIver Jr., 88, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, pilot and decorated veteran of World War II and the Vietnam War, passed away Friday, June 17, 2005. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Vitas Hospice Care, 2501 Parkview Drive, Suite 600, Fort Worth 76102. Colonel "Mac" McIver was born Oct. 9, 1916, in Oklahoma City, Okla., and raised in Madisonville. He attended North Texas Agriculture College (UTA) and Texas A&M before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and graduated from flight school in June 1943. He served in the European theater as a flight commander in the 450th Bomb Group, 15th Air Force, from December 1943 to August 1944, where he flew 35 missions in the B-24 aircraft. He was shot down and able to successfully crash land his bomber and save his entire crew. For his combat service, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals. He also served as a vice wing commander for a tactical fighter wing in the Republic of Vietnam, where he received the Presidential Unit Citation. His peacetime service included assignments with the Air Training Command and the Tactical Air Command. His 31-year military career took him to Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Alaska and Taiwan. His decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Ribbon, the Air Force Commendation Medal and many other service medals. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Shady Valley Golf Club of Arlington. He was a Shriner and a Freemason for over five years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors: Wife of 66 years, Winnie McIver of Arlington; daughter, Dixie and husband, Tom Martin of Singapore; sons, Tex of Atlanta, Ga., John and wife, Sheri of Arlington; grandchildren, John, Robert, Meredith, Jason, Audra, Amber and Jeffrey; and great-grandchildren, Ashton, Elizabeth and Ann.
