Meyer, Daniel Ray Daniel Ray Meyer 'Big Dan,' 49, died Monday at a local hospital. He was an extraordinary man, who was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. He was the kind of man who took in strays (people and animals) and helped people who were stranded on the side of the road. Since he was a big, strong man with a big heart, he helped so many people move, he lost count. Dan was born July 15, 1953 to Donna and Don Meyer in Oklahoma City. He graduated in 1971 from Northwest Classen High School and in 1976 from the University of Oklahoma. At OU, Dan was named Undergraduate of the Year, 1975-76, by Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, which he also served as president. In 1984 Dan found and married the 'tall redhead' he had been looking for, Debi. He lived in Oklahoma his entire life. At the time of his death, Dan and Debi lived in Woodward. Dan worked in sales most of his adult life, holding positions at Commercial Distributing, Inc., United Brake Parts and NAPA Auto Parts, as well as other companies. In addition to his family, Dan loved music, OU football, snow skiing, barbeque, his dogs, reading and learning, fishing, making speeches with Toastmasters and his friends. Dan had been active in the Conoma Toastmaster's Club, OKC Ski Club, and Central Oklahoma Golden Retriever Club. Dan was proud to be a Democrat, serving the party in many ways. His life will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, at Vondel L. Smith & Son North, 13125 N. MacArthur Blvd. Those wishing to make memorial donations are asked to direct them to the Oklahoma Organ Sharing Network or the American Heart Association. His maternal grandmother, Pauline Gates, and his paternal grandparents, Robert and Birdie Meyer, predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Debi of the home; daughter, Charisse Williams, her husband Michael and their daughter, Makenzi; mother, Donna Gates Meyer and father, Don Meyer; sisters, Dru Lynch and her husband Tom; Diane Hollingsworth and her husband Jim; maternal grandfather, Alvin J. Gates; parents-in-law, Doris and Hugh Martin; brother-in-law, Tony Martin and his wife, D'Ann; grandmother-in- law, Doris Brannon; nieces, Corinne Lynch and Chandler Martin; nephews, Matt Reynolds and Quinn Martin; uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of friends throughout the state. Dan wrote to us during his illness, 'I feel there are angels all about me. I have been uplifted by the emails, cards and calls I have received. Friends have helped me laugh and cry. But, I insist I will never curse my fate.' Dan, we know you are among the angels now. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Oklahoma County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/oklahoma/oklahoma.html
