His loving family was by his side. He was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., March 18, 1940. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Juli; his sister, Helen Smith; and his parents, Shelby and Teresa Mathis. John, my precious and loving husband, was a wonderful and caring father of his two children, Joelle Mathis of Yountville and Jeff Mathis of St. Helena; two step-daughters, Debra Southard of Santa Rosa and Karie Dunahay; and son-in-law Tim Dunahay of Elk Grove. His lights of his life were his two precious grandchildren, Brendon and Deseray Dunahay. He also leaves his brother Richard and Carla Mathis of Kalama, Wash.; brother Ronald and Donna Mathis of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one niece, Jennifer Fisher, and nephew James Mathis, both of Washington; and nephew Tommy Mathis of Reno, Nev. He will be deeply missed by his family and his countless friends. John was an active member of the community. He was a fire department volunteer of 11 years in St. Helena, a member of the American Legion and a past member of the Lions Club. His business, Mathis Floor Covering, was well known in Napa Valley for 40 years, and he always took pride in a job well done. John moved to St. Helena after leaving Oklahoma to join the Navy for four years at the age of 18, later moving to Rutherford, where he made his home. His deepest and most enjoyable recreation was the trips he planned for our close friends and us. He enjoyed making all of the trip plans that were shared countless times with dear friends throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. He also had a great home decorating talent, which was tastefully enjoyed and appreciated in our home. Camping with our family was often a joyous time, especially with the grandchildren. Deep sea fishing at Shelter Cove was a yearly fun- filled experience that he really looked forward to. He took great pleasure in his cooking skills with his friends and family. We shall all dearly miss him, as will many others. A funeral service will be held at Morrison Funeral Chapel on Friday at 11 a.m. and a private interment will follow. A reception will be held at the American Legion Hall in St. Helena at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society, 1342 Trancas St., Napa 94558, 224-4389. Arrangements cared for by Morrison Funeral Chapel,963-3536. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Oklahoma County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/oklahoma/oklahoma.html
