Dr. Paul W., beloved husband, loving father and grandfather, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007, in Orange, California, as he walked upstairs in his home to join his bride of 48 years, Charlotte H. Meyer. Dr. Meyer was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on April 1, 1937, and was an Academy Graduate of St. John's College in Winfield, Kansas in 1955. Dr. Meyer received his B.S. in education from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska in 1959, a M.S. degree in history from Wichita State University in 1966, a second master's degree in social science from Eastern Michigan University in 1968, and his doctorate from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in 1972 in the history and philosophy of education (Dissertation: "History and Philosophy of Education in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod 1920-1940"). Dr. Meyer began his teaching career at Holy Cross Lutheran School in Wichita, Kansas, then served as chairman of the social science division at Cleveland Lutheran High School, in Rocky River, Ohio. Dr. Meyer was a respected and loved college professor at Concordia Lutheran College in Ann Arbor, Michigan from 1965 until 1978, where he enjoyed teaching history and political science. While a professor at Concordia in Ann Arbor, Dr. Meyer was also a guest lecturer at Eastern Michigan University in political science, a guest lecturer in the history and philosophy of education at Wayne State University, and at Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Illinois, in practical theology. Dr. Meyer served as chairman of the United Fund Campaign at Concordia Lutheran College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Board of Education at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, the Academic Policies Committee, and served as the Pittsfield Township delegate to the Republican Party, while building both an income property in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the former family home in Saline, Michigan. During Dr. Meyer's sabbatical, 1975-1976, he completed the academic requirements at Concordia Theological Seminary for a colloquy into the Lutheran ministry. In 1978 Dr. Meyer was called to Concordia University in Irvine, California, where he served as Chairman of the Division of Social Science at Christ College Irvine and Professor of Political Science and Philosophy. Dr. Meyer was called as a full time pastor to Salem Lutheran Church in 1982, where he joyfully ministered until his retirement in 2001. Following a brief respite in Europe, a few months after his retirement, Dr. Meyer returned to church work as an interim pastor, first at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, in Riverside, California, from Fall, 2001 through 2003, and then at Faith Lutheran Church in Riverside, California. Paul and Charlotte married in 1959, and together raised three children, Paula E. Meyer, Esq., Eric Meyer, D.D.S., and Prof. Katharine Meyer Borst. The family grew with their spouses, Noha Meyer and Rev. Steven Borst, and Paul and Charlotte enjoyed six grandchildren, Zachary, Andreas, Joseph Paul, Natasha, Nicolai, and Nicole, all of whom are members of Salem Lutheran Church. Dr. Meyer's intellect, compassion, and sense of humor, will be missed by his family, former students and parishioners, and he will be remembered as a servant of God who was never happier than when he was working, traveling with his wife, or enjoying a meal with his family. Dr. Meyer's life will be celebrated at a memorial service to be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at Salem Lutheran Church, 6500 E. Santiago Canyon Road, in Orange, California. Donations may be made in Dr. Meyer's memory to Salem Lutheran Church, Sanctuary Fund or Concordia University Irvine, Church Worker Scholarship Fund. Published in the Orange County Register on 1/30/2007. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Oklahoma County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/oklahoma/oklahoma.html
