All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Cremation Meyer, Sherman Wayne Sherman Wayne Meyer passed away on November 18, 2006, from complications associated with several minor strokes over the last four years. He was 97, born August 17, 1909, on a farm near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and was raised along with his two brothers and three sisters. The family homesteaded near Corsica, South Dakota, and later moved to a farm in Southeast Iowa near Keosaqua. In 1926, following high school, he entered Des Moines Still College of Osteopathy. He graduated in 1930 and started his medical practice in Fenton, Iowa. He met his wife of 74 years, Lily Rasmusson, the local school teacher, in 1932. In 1934, he and Lily moved to Algona, Iowa, where sons Wayne and Jon were born. After many hard winters, Sherman and Lily decided to move to a drier climate for health reasons. They settled in Hot Springs, New Mexico, and helped revive the old Virginia Ann Hospital. After World War II, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Sherman was instrumental in establishing the Phoenix General Osteopathic Hospital and also helped organize the Tucson General Hospital. In 1965, after 20 years of practice in Phoenix, Sherman and Lily accepted a challenge from Bud and Lucille Graham of Parker, Arizona, to move to Parker and help the community build a new hospital for northern Yuma County (now LaPaz County). He was very active in the Parker area and was honored as Man of the Year by the Parker Chamber of Commerce. Throughout his life, he was active as a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Methodist Church, the Rotary Club, the Elks Club and various professional Osteopathic associations. He was inducted into the American College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons in the 1950s. He retired for the 4th time in 1994 at the age of 85. He loved duck hunting, deep-sea fishing and his rose garden. He was known for his dedication to healing his patients and was always on call for them. He was preceded in death by his father, Murray and mother, Emma Mae; stepmother, Carrie; brother, Harold; sisters, Orpha and Juanita; his grandson, Michael B. Meyer and great- grandson, Thomas James Meyer. Sherman is survived by his wife, Lily; son, Wayne (Kay) of Tucson, Arizona; son, Jon (Betty) of Show Low, Arizona; sister, Opal; brother, Walter; granddaughter, Maria Meyer Oakum and her children, Jordan and Trevor; granddaughter, Lisa (Kent) Livingston and their children, Maddie, Grant, Rhett and Alexis; grandson, Brian Meyer (Katie) and his children, Jeffrey and Steven. He is also survived by great-grandsons, Jacob and Wayne Meyer; great- granddaughters, Kathlene and Francine Meyer and Charlene Bonney (Jonathan) and great-great-grandson, Ashton Bonney. Arrangements were made by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL of Tucson, Arizona, where his remains were cremated. The family is planning a celebration of his life after the New Year.
