One Eighth Cherokee, Mildred was born a twin on July 23, 1910, at Bacone College Campus in Muskogee, OK, to B.K. and Kathleen 'Pats' Jordan. After graduating from Muskogee High School she moved with her family to Oklahoma City. She received her BS degree in math from Oklahoma City University in 1932. Prior to receiving a teaching position in the OKC Public School Systems she substituted in Purcell where she met her future husband, Jim Nix. Jim and Mildred were married October 30, 1935. Although she taught at various schools she ended her career at the original Webster Junior High in 1955. According to her students she was something that money couldn't buy in a lifetime. Every day, she got a strong message across about learning the subject matter as well as a little about life. At a time when girls were not expected to enjoy mathematics or have an aptitude for that subject, Mrs. Nix was able to instill in her girls an interest in math, and to communicate the necessary skills to them. After leaving teaching Mildred became a business partner with her husband. While she and her husband established Nix Supply, Nixco Manufacturing was founded and expanded to the Tulsa area. In 1979 Nix Supply was sold and they focused solely on Nixco, which was then sold in August 2000. Mildred who was motivated and dedicated always had a positive mental attitude. She made a lasting impression on everyone, employees as well as students. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 65 years, James W. Nix; son, Jimmy Nix, II and twin sister, Callie Stinson. Survivors include her daughter, Patsiann Nix Smith and husband, S.C. 'Butch' Smith; daughter-in-law, Darla Nix; Grandson, Jimmy Nix, III and wife, Kelly and great grandchildren, Jamie (13), Andy (11), and Josh (8) Nix. Memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church Mildred Nix Memorial or Hospice of Oklahoma County. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church, 1001 N.W. 25th with interment to follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Oklahoma City, OK.
