Sill National Cemetery--Elgin OK Comanche County Chronicle Lawrence Oakley Written by: Hodge Funeral Home - Fletcher April 24, 1917 ~ November 14, 2004 OKLAHOMA CITY- funeral services for Lawrence Ellis Oakley, 87 of Oklahoma City, formerly of Elgin and Lawton, will be Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church Chapel, Lawton, with Rev. Tom Willoughby, associate pastor, officiating. Mr. Oakley died Sunday, November 14, 2004 in an Oklahoma City nursing center. Burial will be in the Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, OK with Military Honors presented by personnel from Ft. Sill. Funeral services are under direction of Hodge Funeral Home, Fletcher. He was born April 24, 1917 in Madill, OK to Calvin Oakley and Addie (Martin) Oakley. He moved to the Fletcher area with his family at the age of 5 and grew up in that area. He served in the U.S. Army for over 20 years, retiring from the service in 1962. His awards during service include; the National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with Bronze Clasp, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, ROK Presidential Unit Citation, and the Korean Services Medal. He married Yukiko Harra, November 4, 1954 in Yokohama, Japan. Just this month they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. After his retiring from the army he was employed in the civil service at Ft. Sill during which time he and his family lived in the Lawton and Elgin areas from 1962 to 2002 when he and his wife moved to Okla. City. Lawrence was a resident of the Northwest Nursing Center of Oklahoma City for 2 years and for the last few weeks was a resident of Amberwood Nursing Center in Oklahoma City. He had been a member of First Baptist of Lawton then Village Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Survivors include; his wife; Yukiko (Hara) Oakley of the home, 5 daughters; Linda Martin and her companion, Steve of Oklahoma City, Lois Legako and her husband, Victor of Tuttle, Lola Shaddinger and her husband, Win of Highland Village, TX, Lana Johnston and her husband, Robert of Frederick, and Lottie Berger and her husband, Marc of New York, NY, 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His parents, 4 brothers and 6 sisters preceded him in death.
