All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm ========================================================================== O'Donovan, Luz Maria Luz Maria O'Donovan, 98, died peacefully on September 17, 2002, surrounded by her family. Maria was born January 14, 1904, in Chihuahua, State of Chihuahua, Mexico. Her parents, Maura and Francisco Garcia; six brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William M. O'Donovan, Sr.; son, Thomas J. O'Donovan; nephew Ateno (Sonny) Garcia, Jr. Survivors include her daughter, Kathy and son-in-law, Denzel Treece, Edmond OK; son, William, San Diego, CA; son, Eugene and daughter-in-law, Gail, El Cajon, CA; daughter-in law, Patricia O'Donovan, Olathe, KS; step-daughter, Gloria and son-in-law, Al Jackson. Las Lunas, NM; foster daughter, Yolanda Castrellon, El Paso, TX; sixteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The Garcias moved to El Paso when Maria was 9 yrs old. Her brother, Ciro, introduced her to William in 1932 and they were married one year later. Maria, William and children, Kathy and William Jr. moved to Oakland, CA in 1941 where two more sons, Thomas and Eugene were born. They moved to Reno, NV in 1949. In November 1950, the family moved to Hawthorne, NV. After the death of her husband in 1955, Maria went to work at the then Naval Ammunition Depot in the Ordinance Department and eventually promoted to crew chief. She retired from Civil Service in 1969 and moved to El Paso to care for her terminally ill sister, Maura. Maria volunteered for many church activities, including chairing fundraisers and bazaars. She was foster mother for several years. In 1988, she moved to Edmond OK. She joined the parish of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She attended daily Mass, was a Eucharistic Minister and visited nursing homes. She was also active in fundraising for the newly established St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, until she suffered a stroke on August 8, 2002, she was an enthusiastic participant in the St. John's Wednesday Time-Out Program. During her lifetime, she was also a member of the Blue Army, the Catholic Daughters of America and the Third Order of St. Francis. Maria was an active member of the Women's Society and was honored as St. John's Woman of Achievement in 1995. On November 30, 2001, at age 97, she became a resident of Alterra Sterling House on Danforth St., Edmond. She loved living there, loved, the caregivers and made friends with many fellow residents. The family sincerely wishes to thank Drs Levy and Morgan, the priests from St. John's, friends who visited and comforted Maria and to the following services: care workers and nursing staff at Bryant Integrated Specialty Hospital; to Randie McDougall and the exceptional staff at Sterling House for their loving care, and a special thank you to Good Shepherd Hospice who provided comfort to the family and a dignified passage from life to death for Maria. She was a woman of great faith, strong convictions who gave us unconditional love. We will miss her quick wit, and her smile. Wake service will be at 7:00 p.m. September 20, 2002 at Baggerley Funeral Home Chapel, Edmond. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2002, St. John Catholic Church, Edmond, with interment following at Memorial Park Cemetery, Oklahoma City OK. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Scholarship Fund or charity of choice. Baggerley Funeral Home 930 S.
