"Ed" Curtis E. 'Ed', age 88, passed away February 28, 2003 in Tulsa, OK, but had been a longtime resident of Oklahoma City. Born March 27, 1914 to A. J. and Eva Benson Olvey, Ed grew up around the Fox, OK area and attended high school in Oklahoma City, then OCU. Ed married his college sweetheart, Virginia Metz, on January 14, 1938, who preceded him in death. He began his career as a teacher and coach then went on to be Supt. of Schools for Fairland, Marlow and Afton, OK public schools and later retired from the State Dept, of Education. One thing Ed was very proud of was the fact that he was able to take time out from teaching during WWII and was one of 41 Americans who proudly went to England in 1942 to drill for oil in Sherwood Forest area to provide fuel for the British planes. The drillers were honored in 1991 with a statue of the 'oil patch warrior', which stands tall today in Sherwood Forest. A duplicate statue honoring the drillers was dedicated in November 10, 2001 in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where the crews originated. Ed is survived by two children, Curt Olvey and Linda Tucker of Tulsa; four grandchildren, Jennine Ballew, Janice Tucker of Phoenix, AZ and John Olvey and Emily Olvey, of Atlanta, GA and one great grandson, Alexander Ballew. Ed was loved by his family and will be greatly missed. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, March 3, 2003 at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery in Oklahoma City. GUARDIAN WEST 41 & N.
