Owens, Geraldine Vera    

Geraldine Vera Owens was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Storry on 
December 23, 1924, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Geraldine attended Dunbar Elementary School, and later graduated from Douglas High 
School in Oklahoma. After high school she moved to Tyler, Texas where 
she attended and graduated from Barber College. She moved to 
Portland, Oregon where she met her husband, Charles Owens. The couple 
moved to Bakersfield, California in 1948 and wed February 27th, that 
same year. To this union was born two beautiful children, Gloria and 
Alfred. Geraldine was an entrepreneur who owned and operated Gerry's 
Barber Shop for nineteen years. She was well known as an extremely 
talented seamstress. Her most valued contribution to the community 
was President of Fremont School's P.T.A. in the 1960's as an activist 
for children's rights to equal education. Geraldine was preceded in 
death by her son, Alfred Owens. She leaves to cherish in memory her 
husband, Charles A. Owens; one daughter, Gloria Smith and son-in-law, 
Johnnie; granddaughters, Delisa Owens, Laticka Portis and her 
husband, Johnny; great-grandchildren, Jaylan and Kayla Rufus, and 
Johnny Portis III; a sister, Joe Berta Evans; three nieces, Juanita 
Evans, June Marie Odom, all of Bakersfield, and Freddye Taylor of San 
Diego; cousin, Judge Albert and Mildred Matthews of La Puente; many 
nieces, nephews, and special neighbors. Visitation begins today 
Thursday, August 23rd, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., with a meditation from 
6:00-7:00 p.m., at Rucker's Mortuary. A memorial service will be held 
on Friday, August 24th, 10:00 a.m., at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 825 
California Avenue. Geraldine Vera Owens Dec. 23, 1924 - Aug. 16, 2007
