"Bob" Price, 76, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Barry Owens, associate pastor, and Dr. Johnny Funderburg, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery with military honors accorded by Altus Air Force Base in Altus, Okla. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Price was born on Sept. 7, 1927, in Reading, Kan., to Benjamin Ferguson Price Sr. and Gladys Watson Price. He received a bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., in 1951. He married Martha "Marty" White on Dec. 29, 1951, in Oklahoma City. He served as an Air Force jet fighter pilot during the Korean Conflict, where he was awarded the Air Medal for his combat missions. He and Marty returned to Pampa, where he owned and operated a ranch for the past 50 years. In 1966, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represented the Texas Panhandle in a manner all people could be proud of. He was known as the only member of Congress who flew Mach-3 in the SR-71 Blackbird, the F111A and the F-4E Phantom. In 1978, he was elected to the Texas Senate, where he again shared his passion for helping the people of the Panhandle. He and Marty returned to Pampa permanently in 1981. Bob was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of Pampa Masonic Lodge No. 966 AF & AM, the El Paso Scottish Rite Consistory, Khiva Temple of Amarillo, Pampa Shrine Club and was a former member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club. Bob traveled the world but he always returned home expressing his respect and admiration for democracy and the freedom we have in America. Despite his travels, Bob was never happier or freer than while working at the ranch. He farmed and ranched until his death. He was preceded in death by an infant son, David Wayne Price, who died at birth, and a son, Robert Grant Price in 1987. At Grant's funeral, Bob wrote, "He was loaned to his mother and me for a very short time." Bob Price was loaned to our family and friends to make a difference in our lives. He was kind and caring to many different people in many different walks of life. No person was unimportant to him. Survivors include his wife of almost 53 years; a son, Carl Price and wife, Kelly, and their children, Courtney, Grayson, Bridget and Daniella, all of Houston; a daughter, Janice Johnson and husband, Marc, and their children, Nicholas, Miles and Elise, all of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a brother, Ben Price Jr. of Reading. The family suggests memorials be to Harrington Cancer Center, 1500 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106, the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231 or to a favorite charity.
