All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Porta, Hazel Howland Hazel Howland Porta passed away peacefully on January 1, 2003 at the age of 99. Born in Oklahoma City on June 11, 1903 to Hattie and Egbert Howland. Hazel grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Central High School. In 1933, she married Lester T. Porta, who pursued a career in the U.S. Military. As a military wife, Hazel boasted that she had moved her family more than 30 times to various parts of the U.S. and Europe. After her husband's retirement, the family moved back to OKC in 1955, where she devoted full time to raising not only her children, but any stray boy that came through her door. After her husband's passing in 1963, Hazel made a career in apartment management. In addition to her duties, she always had a cup of hot coffee and a piece of apple pie ready to greet her many friends and visitors. Hazel also enjoyed various hobbies, one of which was that of an accomplished seamstress. Many a bride in Oklahoma City wore a hand stitched gown by Hazel. She also enjoyed China painting, crocheting, baking, canning, and country drives. Hazel was the mother to a large and extended family. Col. James R. Porta (dec.), Jeanne Porta Mager of Oklahoma City, Edward A. Porta (dec), Charles E, Porta of Oklahoma City, Dean Porta of Cheyenne, WY; grandchildren: Steve Porta and Scott Porta, Melissa Mager, Michael Mager, Tony Porta, Paula Porta, and numerous great grandchildren, including Bill and Alan Mager of Oklahoma City. In addition to her immediate family, Hazel also became mother to several other boys, including Robert Reutlinger of Houston, TX. Hazel is also survived by her brother, Foster Howland of Denver, Co. Hazel was the ultimate caregiver to those who needed physical, emotional, and long term care. Her life of generosity continued after her death by the giving of herself to the Oklahoma University Medical Research Foundation. A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. January 11, 2003 at May Avenue United Methodist Church, 2604 N. May Ave., Oklahoma City, OK, where Hazel was a member for many years. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or a charity of your choice.
