All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Reynolds, Don Sunderland Don Sunderland, of Del City, passed away July 29, 2002 at the age of 86. He was born November 27, 1915, to Ollie and Esther Reynolds in Miami, OK. He attended Oklahoma Public Schools and The University of Oklahoma. Don married Lois M. Ward on December 24, 1939, in Oklahoma City. He graduated from the US Army Ordnance Academy, Company G in 1943. He then served during World War II and the Korean Conflict as an Ordnance Officer and was discharged with the rank of Major. In 1951, Don and Lois moved to Del City where they spent the remainder of their wonderful 62 years of marriage together. Don retired from Del State Bank as Vice President, First National Bank of Del City as Chairman of the Board, and Twin 'R' Corporation as Chairman. He served on the Board of Regents for Rose State College for over 30 years. This privilege recently gave him the honor of being recognized as the longest serving state Regent in the history of Oklahoma. His many other professional and community affiliations include Member of the US Air Force Association, Past President American Field Service Chapter for Foreign Exchange Students, Past President Del City Chamber of Commerce, Past President Del City Historical Society, Past President Central Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce, Past President Del City Lions Club, Former Mayor and City Councilman of Del City, Former Certified Lay Speaker of the United Methodist Church, Former Teacher of Homebuilders Adult Sunday School Class at Sunny Lane United Methodist Church (30 + years), Member of the Disabled American Veterans, Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Former Member Bi-District Board of Missions of Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church. Don belonged to the Guthrie Scottish Rite and INDIA Shrine and was a 32nd Degree Mason with Del City Lodge #536. In 1982, he was selected by President Ronald Reagan and Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger as one of 50 members throughout the United States to serve on the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference (JCOC 47) to study the defense posture of US Forces on both domestic and foreign installations of Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps personnel. Don took great pride in serving his country, his community and his friends. 'People are the most important thing,' he would say, and believed wholeheartedly as is manifested in the many lives he has contributed to and touched. Traveling, spending time outdoors,and telling stories to family and friends were among his favorite pastimes. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Lois; one sister, Virginia Reynolds; and one son-in-law, Elvin Lee Miller. He is survived by two daughters, Donna Miller and Marilyn Hodgkinson, both of Del City; five granddaughters, Leslie Nan Peterson and husband Bryan, Lisa Marie Coleman and husband Barry, Lori Ann Miller, Lisa Kay Stout and husband Don, and Angela Renee Hodgkinson; two great grandchildren, Colin Peterson and Brianna Coleman; and one great grandson due in October; one brother, Bill J. Reynolds, MD, and wife Ann; several nieces, nephews and cousins; special caregiver, Wanda Baxter and many, many friends. Services will be held Thursday, August 1, 2002 11:00 AM at The Rose State College Communication Center, interment to follow at Sunny Lane Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Sunny Lane United Methodist Church or to the Rose State College Foundation.
