Spears SPEARS, RUTH C. 1918 - 2006. Ruth C. Spears of Portland, Oregon passed away Thursday, December 28. The daughter of Viola and Stanley Chappell, she was born August 28, 1918 in Grand Junction, Colorado. Ruth grew up in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa, majoring in art. During World War II she worked as a secretary for Douglas Aircraft. On April 31, 1944 she married Harold E. Spears in Oklahoma City. They moved to Portland, Oregon in 1948 where Harold pursued a successful career in the recreational vehicle business. Ruth enjoyed her family and friends, homemaking, sewing, decorating and adventures with her beloved Harold. On their power boat, the Javelin, they cruised the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, the Washington coast, and the U.S. and Canadian San Juan Islands. During their 61 year marriage they traveled to 49 of the 50 states, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, India and the U.S.S.R. (now Russia). Ruth was an active member of Montavilla United Methodist Church for over 58 years. She took great delight in delivering Meals on Wheels for Cherry Blossom Loaves and Fishes for over 13 years. Ruth was known for her youthful spirit, her sense of fun, her love of color and creativity. She took great pride in her "wild taste". She is survived by daughters Sherilyn Spears and Barbara Spears of Portland, granddaughter Tristin Tate of Boise Idaho and her adored dog Maddy whom she adopted from Indigo Rescue. A memorial service in her honor will be held at I p.m. on Wednesday January 3 at Montavilla United Methodist Church, 232 SE 80th in Portland.
