He was born May 12, 1925 in Athens, Tennessee. His great smile and warm heart along with his dedication and loyalty to family & friends will be greatly missed and never forgotten. From 1967 to 1986, he was President and Owner of Sooner Ford in Oklahoma City at which time he retired and moved to his lake home at Checotah, Oklahoma. He was a 32nd Degree Mason & Shriner. Herschel proudly served in the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. He served as a Trustee and Chairman of Oklahoma County Home Finance Authority which provided housing to low and medium income families. He later served as a member of the Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Commission as well as a member of Past Presidents Organizations. Herschel was an avid booster and fan of Oklahoma State University and the University of Tennessee. He loved hunting with his son- in-law and grandson, golfing with his 'Buddy', mowing with his new tractor and traveling the world with LaDean. He is survived by his Daughter Leah Roberts, her husband Chuck and grandchildren, Meaghan and Clark of Midwest City, OK. His Daughter and family were the delights of his life. He was commonly referred to as 'Hootie' by his grandchildren. Herschel was extremely proud of Meaghan's National Cheerleading accomplishments, Clark's recent Baseball 'No Hitter' and Leah & Chuck's involvement in their children's activities and school functions. Survivors also include his Mother, Ruby Smith, brother Willard Smith and wife Mary, nephew Alan Smith and wife Karen and their children all of Chattanooga, TN and his sister Wilma Smith of Rossville, GA. He will also be missed by his loving, caring and faithful companion, LaDean Allen and her family, Tom and Terri Schmidt and his 'Buddy', Michael (who only knew him as his 'Pop Pop' ) all of Oklahoma City, OK, Scott and Stacy Allen and their children, Stephanie & Christina of Brentwood, TN, Kent and Vicki Allen and their children, Christopher, Sean and Kelli of Pineville, LA. He was blessed with special friends, David & Jane Patton, Don Stidham, his coffee buddies 'The Bullwinkle Club', the Katy crowd, his neighbors Fran and Minnie along with many many more friends and business associates too numerous to mention throughout the state. 'GOD SAW YOU' - God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered 'Come to Me.' With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away, and though we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hands were put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Many special thanks to Dr. John Chaffin, Annette Hixon and Dr. Charles Bethea. Also to Dr. Chris Sholer, Dr. Stephen Lee, Dr. William Cook, the Pacer Fitness Doctors and Staff along with the 8th Floor Cardiac Intensive Care Nursing Staff at Integris Baptist Hospital for the numerous hours of care and concern given to Herschel and his family.
