(Bernie) Semtner, Jr., age 81, died August 27, 2002. A lifelong resident of Oklahoma City, Bernie was born September 22, 1920, to Bernard L. and May C. Semtner and graduated from Central High School. He attended Carnegie-Mellon University and graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Printing Management. Bernie loved flying and served in the US Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 first as a flight instructor and later as a Flight Officer assigned to the Air Transport Command based in India and China. He married Eleanor Coleman on June 30, 1947, and this year they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Together they had three daughters and one son. Bernie founded Package Engineers, a flexible packaging printing company, and later owned Semco Color Press, commercial printers and lithographers, which was a family business started in 1921 by his father. He served as president of the Printing Industry of Oklahoma in 1951 and again in 1975, and later served as its executive director from 1976 to 1982. A member of Rotary Club of Oklahoma City for 42 years, Bernie had 29 years of perfect attendance and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Bernie was a founding member of Christ the King Catholic Church and served as president of the Parish Council in 1973-74. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma, serving on its investment committee and later as its president. Bernie is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marilyn Rodgers. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor, and their children and spouses: Julie and Phil Cline, Lexington, VA; Betty and Larry Edwards, Oklahoma City; Barney and Gayle Semtner, Oklahoma City; and Mary Ellen and Steve Hargis, San Pedro, CA. Grandchildren include Ben Cline, Susan & Mark Cline Lucey, Jennifer Semtner, John Semtner, Jeffrey Semtner, Drew Hargis, and Katie Hargis. A wake service will be held at 7:00 pm Friday, August 30, 2002, at Smith & Kernke, 1401 NW 23rd St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, August 31, 2002, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8005 Dorset Dr., with burial at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Christ the King Fund, PO Box 20508, OKC 73156.
