Services were Oct. 16 at the Department of Agriculture building in Salem. A celebration of Ms. Sorrels’ life was Oct. 16 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem. A final service was Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in Tulsa with Marc Dreyer officiating. Burial was at Memorial Park Cemetery. Moore’s Southlawn Chapel handled arrangements. Ms. Sorrels was born June 9, 1949, in Oklahoma City. She grew up in Norman. She attended Norman High School and received a National Merit Letter of Commendation in 1967 and the La Verne Noyes Scholarship for 1967-68. She was admitted into the honors program at the University of Oklahoma in 1967. Believing that life experiences were a key element in learning, Ms. Sorrels took at break from OU to travel and live in other places. She earned an associate degree in architecture technology from the Madison (Wis.) Area Technical College. Next, she lived in Africa six months, traveled in Europe and returned to the United States. She lived for a time on the East Coast. She moved to Santa Fe, N.M., and worked in builders’ supplies to gain a hands-on knowledge of tools and materials. She returned to Norman in the 1980s. She received the Jesse E. Burkett Award from OU in 1985 as the outstanding bachelor of liberal studies graduate. She was named outstanding senior in the college for 1984-85. She traveled to Portland, Ore., after graduation where she worked on a master’s degree in historic preservation. She chose Salem as the place she wanted to live after completing her college courses. She enjoyed the city, made many friends, joined a theater group and was a member of Mensa International. She played the lead role in several plays. She began working in 1992 for the Oregon Department of Agriculture. She began a cottage industry three years ago and made and sold unusual walking sticks. She enjoyed flowers, books, and her dog, Abby. Ms. Sorrels’ family said she had a positive attitude and outgoing personality. They said she was artistic and creative throughout her life.
