Scherzer died early on the morning of February 10th at Lompoc Hospital. Born in the small town of Harrah, Oklahoma, he attended class in a school of less than 50 students in a town of less than 600 residents. While attending Harrah High school he was in the marching band as well as in numerous theater productions. He joined the United States Navy in 1947 where he served as a Damage Control Instructor and was honorably discharged in 1950. After residing in Saratoga, California for 25 years, he moved to Lompoc in 1997 and became immediately involved in the community. Charles belonged to the following organizations: Masonic Lodge (32nd degree mason), Shriners of North America, Lompoc Elks Club, Lompoc Civic Theater, Lompoc Museum, Lompoc Chamber of Commerce, California Grand Jurors Association, Toastmasters of Saratoga, Epworth Methodist Church, and the Epworth Men's Club. He was active in the city of Lompoc as a Senior Commissioner, a member of the Santa Barbara County Grand Jury, a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), and enjoyed working in the Lompoc Civic Theatre. Charles had volunteered as a boys basketball coach in Epwroth and on a video crew for Channel 13 in Cupertino. He had been a Notary Public, licensed in Real Estate sales, a Certified Massage Practitioner, and a licensed airplane pilot. Charles is survived by his daughter Charmaine Moody, her husband Michael and their three children, of Emporia, Kansas. He is also survived by sisters Dorothy Conley of Edmond, Oklahoma, Karen Jones of Sonoma, California; and Bettye Ouimette of Lompoc, California as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Helen Maine. A memorial was held at 2 pm on Saturday, February 17th at Riverview Church of God (1000 N. Seventh St.) in Lompoc, California with Bishop Randy Gustafson officiating.
