Born on January 13, 1924 in Sherman, TX, he was a Veteran of WWII (1943-45) serving on a MineSweeper and in the Korean Conflict (1950-51) serving on an Aircraft Carrier. In between his wartime service, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He retired from Rainbow Bakery in 1987. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather & brother, he was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church and an active lifetime member of the VFW, serving in the honor guard and the DAV. He was proud to serve his country. He loved to travel and listen to gospel music. Oscar is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Erma; 2 daughters, Shirley Troyer & her husband, Dan and Sharon Coursey & her husband, Bill, all of OKC; one son, Richard Griffee of Velma, OK; 3 brothers, Billy Mac Vawter of OKC, James Earl Vawter of Iredall, TX and Joe Don Vawter of Noble, OK; 5 grandchildren and 5 great- grandchildren. An infant son and his parents all precede him in death. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 12, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at Emmaus Baptist Church. Burial will be at Sunny Lane Cemetery in Del City.
