All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Wedding, Mary Elizabeth Mary Elizabeth, 91, died August 21, 2002, at Integris Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was born on November 14, 1910 in Charleston, SC, the second of three children of Robert Berry and Daisy Orene Smith Wedding. Her very early childhood years were spent in Charleston and Knoxville, TN. In 1917 the family moved to Oklahoma City where her father was General Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. and was responsible for the construction of the Y.M.C.A. building. Mary graduated from Central High School in 1929. In 1933 she graduated 'summa cum laude' from Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. She received the 'L.C. Mersfelder Cup' in recognition of her academic achievement as the top graduating senior. Mary began her teaching career in 1934 with the Oklahoma City Public Schools and was assigned to Taft Junior High School until 1956. she then taught at Northwest Classen High School until 1970. Mary taught one year at Heritage Hall and in 1971 joined the faculty of Putnam City High School where she served until her retirement in 1976. Her distinguished teaching career spanned 42 years. She loved her students and her students loved her, as evidenced by the letters of appreciation she received over the years from her former students. Mary was a member of the OEA and NEA. Mary loved to travel and she traveled extensively. She and her beloved brother, Robert (Bob) shared travel logs with various church, civic and other organizations. In 1988, Mary and Bob moved to Spanish Cove Retirement Village in Yukon where she lived until her death. Mary was a long-time member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and in recent years when it became difficult to drive to Oklahoma City, she joined The United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd near Yukon. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William B. and Robert L., and is survived by cousins Caroline Ehlers and husband Eugene of Shreveport, LA, Jule Diggles and husband Doug of Bakersfield, CA and Claudia FitzGerald of Charleston, SC, a number of distant cousins and many friends. Services will be at 2:30PM Tuesday, August 27 at Guardian West Funeral Home with Rev. Rusty Williams officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
