Joan was born April 7, 1927 in Oklahoma City to Carl and Ruby Edwards. She was a bright and happy young girl who excelled in speech and liked to write stories including a short (unpublished) novel entitled "Gwen's High School Days." She attended Classen High School and then the University of Oklahoma where she became a member, and in her senior year, president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She graduated in 1949 with a degree in English. On March 18, 1950, she married a young graduate of the O.U. Law School, Gene Womble. The couple settled in Tulsa where Gene assumed a management position with The Murray R. Womble Company. Over the course of the ensuing years, Joan and Gene raised three daughters Julie, Marty and Sara and moved to Oklahoma City, then back to Tulsa in 1963. Joan's life was filled with caring for and doting on her home, husband, children and eventually, seven cherished grandchildren who called her by the inexplicable nickname, "Go Wash," Once the nest was empty, Joan took positions as a sales associate at The Bazaar shop and then as New Account Representative at Utica Square Bank and WestStar Bank. She was a devoted and active member of Crown Heights Methodist Church in Oklahoma City and Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa. She volunteered her time as a helper at St. John's Hospital and Meals-on-Wheels. She was also a member of the Tuesday Book Club and was active in fund-raising activities for the Oklahoma City Symphony. Favorite pastimes and passions included reading, history, attending movies and plays, knitting, needle pointing, swimming, water skiing, walking and playing Mah Jhongg and bridge with her dear friends. Throughout Joan's life, she was an active and enthusiastic supporter of the Oklahoma Sooner football team and was never a fair-weather fan. Joan traveled the world with Gene, family, friends and church groups including such destinations ad Europe, China, Egypt, Mexico and Canada. Her favorite trips, though, were the many laughter filled road trips taken with Gene, the girls and later with grandchildren spanning the US. from Maine to Marin County. She will live in the hearts of her family and friends as a gracious, charming and hospitable woman who made all feel welcome and delighted to be in her company and lovely home. Her generous and fun-loving spirit will never be forgotten. She is survived by her husband, Gene Womble, daughters, Julie Anderson, Marty Yadon and Sara Dale; their husbands Dan Anderson, Larry Yadon and Frank Dale; grandchildren Bob Blakemore and his wife Melissa, Bernie Garland, Joe, Claire and Jessica Yadon and Stephen and Joanna Evans; brother and sister in-law Gene and Elaine Edwards and beloved niece, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
